“Kitchen Table Tax Talks” Provide Ideas on Keeping Businesses and Residents in New Jersey

Chuck Roberts, President and CEO of Ames Corporation, met with Christopher Christie, NJ GOP gubernatorial candidate, in the second of Christie’s “Kitchen Table Tax Talks.” These talks are a way for Christie, who, if earning the party’s bid in the June 2nd primary, will likely face current Democratic Governor Jon Corzine in the general election on November 3rd, to hear from the citizens of New Jersey helping him develop ideas that will actually work.

The most recent talk was focused on increasingly high taxes, government spending and rising debt in New Jersey. Guests such as Roberts were able to express their concerns and share their ideas about property taxes, business incentives and healthcare. Not surprisingly, the overriding theme became escalating taxes and how they are forcing both businesses and residents to consider relocating to other states.

Roberts suggested that rewards and incentives be provided to towns that share municipal services, rather than penalizing towns that avoid this process. Christie supported this idea, noting that this would be needed to counteract the “not in my backyard” approach to shared services.
